PINKIES FAVES OF 08

Welp it's New Years Eve people and it's time say farewell to 2008. But before I do that lemme recap my favorite creative things of the year.

Favorite Album of 08

It was tough cuz there were a few good albums this year but my fav has to be Sol Angel and the Hadley Street dreams

I also gotta mentions 808s and Heartbreak and Evolver (that's John Legend for those who don't know). Those albums were really great too.

Click to see my post on Sol Angel and the Hadley Street Dreams

supprisingly the you tube videos still work lol

Favorite Book of 08 (spoiler alert)

I wish I could say the entire Twilight Saga but unfortunatley Breaking Dawn was the only one release in 08. So I gotta say Breaking Dawn. I only finished it like 2 weeks ago so I didn't get a post about it. It's great in the sense that the saga is now complete and you finally get to see all they things they've been building up to for the first 3 books but to be perfectly honest my favorite book of the series was eclipse. That's when you really get to find out about Jaspers back story (which is the best of all the Cullen Clan) and when you first get to see Edward and Jacob working together for Bella's wellbeing. The war between the newborns the Cullens and Quileuts was so exciting as well as Edward and Seths battle with Victoria and her newborn. But like I said Eclipse was released in 07 so the only book that qualifies is Breaking Dawn which was also a very hot book.

Favorite Music Video of 08

Gotta be Kanye West Heartless

Heartless from kwest on Vimeo.

And though Kanye gets my favorie video of 08 I have to mention Beyonce Single Ladies for best choreography in a video.

Favorite Movie of 08

Did you really have to ask?

click to read my thoughts on the movie

I also gotta mention The Cronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian, Sex and the City, and Indiana Jones 4 too though.

I would've loved to have a favorite piece of visual art for 08 as well but to be perfectly honest I don't know enough of about modern art to choose. I just know I like looking at it. So I guess that's a new years resolution for me. Learn more about modern art.

Anyways hope all you people have a bangin ass new year! Luv yaz!

COME OVER

I like Estelle. I think it's cool that she isn't trying to hard to be anything. She's just being herself. And I since I have caribbean ancestry (my mother is Bajan..yes like Rihanna.. and my father is Jamaican) I'm always gonna be biased towards any song that's reggae infused. By the way is it me or does it look like Sean Paul shaved the sides of his head? Is he trying to do some wierd braided mohawk thingie?

WICKED COOL STYLE: CASSIE

Might as well acknowledge her for the one talent she has. The chick knows how to rock a freakum dress. Seriously though I do like Cassies style simply because she isn't trying too hard.

I don't really like this song but I wanted to post the video because theres more cool fashion in it. Just watch it on mute. Thats what I do lol.

PLAYA CARDS RIGHT

Keyshia Cole been sexin it up lateley hasn't she? I think she looks gorgeous in this video. I think I may do a wicked cool style post on her. She really be steppin up her fashion game.

CHRISTMAS THURSDAY THROWBACK: SANTA CLAUS IS COMMING TO TOWN

Merry Christmas everyone and Happy Holidays for those who don't celebrate Christmas. Welp this song is on everybody's christmas album. There were a bunch of people I could've chosen that would still qualify for a thursday throwback including the Jackson 5 and Mariah Carey but I chose to go with the lesser knows rendition by Bruce Sprinsteen released in 1973. Enjoy.

WICKED COOL STYLE: THE OBAMAS

I was originally just gonna say Michelle Obama but when I realized I could hardly find pictures of her alone I realized the whole fam is stylin! That's one hot first family!

And just because I love this clip so much

IT'S OVER

Is is me or is Jesse McCartney becoming less and less pop and more and more r&b? I don't get a poser vibe from him either. I get the feeling that he generally likes urban music and it's starting to influence his own. I dig. And for the record...I'd so hit that.

CIRCUS

All I have to say is Britney wants her old pop queen status back really bad. I like this video better than womanizer but I do have to say she's being a bit of a biter. I'll explain more later watch the video first.

So you see the circus theme. But I wonder who was first to make the whole circus thing popular. I'll give you a hint. She she was the other girl involved in the infamous britney madona same sex kiss on the vmas a few years ago. still don't know who i mean? take a look

funny how britney is copying her formal rival. but lemme leave her alone before chris crocker comes after me. lmao!

THURSDAY THROWBACK: ELEANOR RIGBY

Ok so I'm finally out of the 90s. I took it all the way back to the 60s. 1966 to be exact. SO HA! I've listening to my mother's Beatles #1s cd lately. A lot of good songs on there but i chose to go with Eleanor Rigby.

808s AND HEARTBREAK

First off let me say I wasn't shocked at all by my feelings for this album. I expected it to be great and I got just what I was expecting. Everyone knows that this was going to be an album where Kanye does a lot of singing. That didn't surprise me. Rappers sing a lot these days but Kanye's voice isn't half bad actually. He sounds better than some actual singers (*cough* T-Pain *cough* Akon). What I especially like is that he's singing but he still rides the beats like a rapper. You sometimes forget he's singing so I think they guys will like it. Who can't relate to being tortured by love anyway? I also dig the primal straight out of africa sound it has. It was hard for me to pic my favorite cuz it blends well too. It almost sounds like one really long song. But I chose Amazing featuring young jeezey.

and see you in my nightmares featuring lil wayne (by the way has anybody notices lil wayne always sounds better on other people's songs than he does on his own?). I think it's hilarous how Kanye is literally growling on this song.

WICKED COOL STYLE: FEFE DOBSON

Yes I'm finally stepping away from hip hop style and stepping into girly punk. I know Fefe fell off the face of the earth but I still think she's cool. And I love her style.

SOMETHING ELSE

I know i'm REALLY late reviewing this album now. I wasn't going to originally but I was listening to it recently and I had to praise Robin Thickes voice. I don't even care what the hell he's saying his voice is just so damn entrancing. This album is great but only if you're into real soul. If you're lookin for a cd to bump before u go to the club this aint it. This is what u listen to when ur in the mood for chillin out and relaxing (or in the mood for baby makin). Robin Thicke gets my sexiest voice award (and I mean speaking or singing). I think the song loverman best explains what I'm talking about. Take a listen.

HOW COME NOBODY TOLD ME JK ROWLING HAS A NEW BOOK OUT?

I thought J K Rowling was gonna get into writing mysteries when she finished the HP series. I thought Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows would be the last I'd see of the wizarding world but lo and behold here she goes with a book of wizard fairy tales. It was released a week ago and looks a little something like this.

It has the story about the Three Brothers (the story about the Deathly Hallows told in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows) as well as other wizard fairy tales. Cool. I love spin off books. Though I would've loved to see a Harry Potter prequel tell the story of James and Lilly Potter. Most of what we know about them is told by Sirius Black and Severus Snape but I wanna know what happened from their point of view. But I don't think Rowling is gonna bother with that. Anyways stay tuned for my thoughts on this one after I've gotten a chance to read it.

THURSDAY THROWBACK: UNTITLED (HOW DOES IT FEEL)

This video needs no introduction. Go on and drool ladies.

P.S. yeah I know I can't get out of the 90s but hell I'm only 22 what do you expect? I'll try to think of thursday throwback that came out before 1990.

WHAT THE HELL HAPPENED TO LAUREN HILL?

I know she still does music and stuff but I mean what happened to the Lauren Hill in the 90s before she lost her mind? I miss her. I just found the Miseducation of Lauren Hill in the library a few weeks ago and put it on my ipod. I had almost forgotte how amazingly incredible that album was. It was a freakin classic. I had also almost forgotten that Lauren was hands down the best female rapper out when she was in her prime. And it even better that she had done it without being all overly sexual like the rest of them and without trying to act overly hard and manly like the rest of them. Plus she didn't have the stereotypical beauty. She was herself. She wasn't wearing revealing clothes. She wasn't wearing miles of weave. She didn't dye her hair and she showed off her dark skin. Damn Lauren what happened? Come back to us! Here are my favorite songs off the Miseducation of Lauren Hill. Of the singles I chose Lost Ones. There's no video but it was a single.

And of the non singles I picked I Used to Love Him featuring Mary J Blidge

WICKED COOL STYLE: TIFFANY EVANS

I always thought this little vocal powerhouse was so adorable. Well actually she's 16 no so maybe I shouldn't call her little. Anyways like Teyanna Taylor she does the girly hip hop thing well. I love the bright colors. Take a look.

And just because I feel bad her videos never get much airplay.

She's adorable aint she?

FOR ANYONE WHO WONDERED WHAT I THOUGHT OF THE TWILIGHT MOVIE.

I purposefully left a review of the twilight movie off this blog because I already have a separate blog for movies with my sister. BUT since I talk about twilight quite often on this blog (and i'm not done yet. I still have thoughts on the rest of the saga once i'm finished reading breaking dawn) I figured I'd let the people that don't know about the other blog know what I thought.

"When I went to see Twilight on it opening night, I was fully prepared to ignore the harsh reviews I’d read beforehand. Now that I’ve seen it I still think the reviews were too harsh but they were right in some aspects.

First I read that Robert Pattinson’s performance was mediocre. I disagree (and I swear this isn’t just me being biased because I think he’s hot). Because I’d seen a dozen Robert Pattinson interviews about the movie I was aware he was going to play Edward a bit darker and more angsty than he was portrayed in the book so I wasn’t shocked to see it on screen at all. Furthermore I’m not upset he strayed from the book because what he says, does make sense. Edward is a killer only because it’s in his vampire nature but he doesn’t want to be at all. Plus, he’s in love with a girl who he also has strong urges to kill because her blood smells extremely enticing to him. He describes it as putting a recovering alcoholic in a room filled with the finest smelling wine. When faced with such a situation one is bound to experience some inner turmoil to say the very least so it makes sense to play an irritable, angsty Edward. Pattinson does that quite well. I’m also very impressed with his American accent and I’m even more impressed that he did it without any training. Very nice...."

I AM SASHA FIERCE

I usually avoid trashing Beyonce because she's so loved in the music industry. I know if I ever said anything too mean about her then I'd be known as the Beyonce hater and I don't want that. But there's no way I can think of something nice to say about this horrible cd. I Am damn near put me to sleep and it's not because it's all soft slow songs either. We all know Beyonce can murder the hell out of power ballad. Dangerously in Love and Flaws and All are two of the most beautiful slow songs I've ever heard. All the songs on I Am are just bland and boring. I expected I would like Sasha Fierce more because I'm so in love with the song Single Ladies. I did like Sasha Fierce more but not much more. Beyonce took a crack at the techno infused pop that Rihanna made ever so popular. It doesn't suit her. I give her props for finally trying something new though. She also has a song that's sung over the beat of Lil Wayne's a Milli. Anyone who knows me knows that it annoys the living shit out of me when Beyonce tries to act hard. It's just not convincing at all and it makes her look like a poser. She has about as much street cred as one of those spoiled sweet 16 chicks from mtv and no being married to Jay Z doesn't help her any in that department. If anything it makes Jay looks more sophisitcated and upscale but it doesn't make Beyonce look any more street. This album was a huge disappointment and it seems to me like it was hastily made which is wierd because I heard on the radio it took her a year to make. If that's the case then maybe she should've rushed it a little more because Dangerously in Love and B'Day were made in a shorter amount of time and they were soooo much better. I was able to listen to them straight through and like every song. But out of the 12 songs on I Am Sasha Fierce I only like 3 and one of them is already a single. Usually I'd post my favorite song at this point but since I have no favorite song I'll post the ones I thought were most interesting. Off of I Am I chose Ave Maria because her voice sounds angelic.

And off of Sasha fierce I chose Sweet Dreams because it was interesting to see Beyonce try something different.

THURSDAY THROWBACK: TAKE A BOW

This was released back in 94 and I think it's the most beautiful ballad Madonna ever made. I also think it's the most beautiful she ever looked in a music video.

PINKIE'S BIRTHDAY PLAYLIST

IT'S MY BIRTHDAY BITCHES!!!! This post is gonna be all about me! If you couldn't figure it out before I watch a lot of music videos. The first channel I always turn to in the morning is mtv hits and usually when the celebs have something to celebrate they get to choose their own favorite videos while plugging their own. I don't have any videos to plug but I do like to take pictures so before i get into my favorite videos I just wanted to show off my own creativity. Take a look.

Hawaii Blowhole
I took this when I went on vacation in Hawaii. This is beach called the blowhole because when the water washes up into the rocks in actually spews upward like the blowhole on a whale.

Rose Bath

I took this when I was taking a bath because it reminded me of American Beauty. Every time the father had a fantasy about his daughters best friend they would always find a way to work roses into the scene. I thought it was cool. And yes those are my legs.

Lonely College Student

I took this on my lunch break at the Brooklyn College fish pond. I though it was interesting because in high school people usually travel in packs during lunch. In college people still travel in packs but around the fish pond it wasn't unusual to see people alone just doing their own thing. It was a great place to relax with ur thoughts.

Caged Mutt

I took this while looking outside of my gated back door and looking into my backyard. The iron gates reminded me of prison bars and it looks like my dog is in jail. I'm looking through bars too so it's looks like I'm in jail as well. The dog in the picture died recently of heart problems. He was an old dog. So now this pic is like a memorial to him.

Ok now that I'm done showing off my own creativity it's time for my birthday playlist. I dunno I had trouble narrowing it down to five favorites so i just took out my ipod and put my top 100 most played songs playlist on shuffle and picked the first 5 that came up. Enjoy.

First up is #55 Daft Punk One More Time with 33 plays

Next up is #74 Paramore Decode with 30 plays

Next is #45 Beyonce Ring the Alarm with 36 plays

Beyonce - Ring The Alarm

Next is #44 Avril Lavigne Hot with 36 plays

Last is #19 Chris Brown Kiss Kiss with 54 plays

Chris Brown feat T-Pain - Kiss Kiss

Just in case you were wondering what the number one played song on my ipod is it's Rihanna Sell Me Candy with 116 plays

GIRL IN A FIX

Hey people! Well hey ladies in particular. I came across a really freakin cool ass book. It's called girl in a fix. It looks like this.

This book is great because it gives a lot of remedies for little beauty issues even if you're low on beauty products. For example did you know those paper toilet seat covers make great oil absorbers? It worked for me. My face was really oily on a day when I had a job interview so i just grabbed a seat cover from the bathroom and it got the oil right off. Or did you know you could make a hot oil treatment out of safflower oil from the grocery store? This book is full of fun little beauty facts that could prove quite useful. I recommend every female out there go and pick it up.

EYE CANDY THEME: CUPCAKES!

So my new obsession as far as food is concerned is cupcakes. Apparently there's a whole sub culture of people who are completely obsessed with cupcakes and I think I'm becoming one of them. People even get cupcake tattoos. They can even be the inspiration of great art.

  1. Pink Cloud by Elizabeth Mitchell Taylor

  2. Three Cupcakes by Ian Mclean

  3. Didn't catch the name of this one but it's by Marlene Kaltsmitt-Telleria

  4. Cupcake Sunday by Cindy Yandell

cool huh?

HP6 TRAILER

To be honest I really didn't expect them to go ahead and make 8 whole Harry Potter movies (Deathly Hallows is gonna be split into two parts for those who don't know). I didn't think that people were really gonna go to the theater and see theses same old kids (and I use the term kids loosely) 8 times. I really thought they were gonna stop at 4 and call it a day. But lo and behold here goes the trailer for HP6, Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince. Now this movie was supposed to come out on 11-21-08 but all my fellow TWERDs (twilight nerds) out there know why that isn't happening. For those of you that have been under a rock it's because Twilight bumped HP out of that release date. Though I'm a huge Twilight fan I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for good old HP. Though I still think the movies have gone downhill since the original Dumbledore died and since they keep switching directors and since they stopped sticking to the book, I fully intend to continue supporting them. The new release date is 07-17-09. Six down two more to go. Here's the trailer

P.S. For those of you who didn't read the books and rely solely on the movies. I decided not to spoil the ending for you. Though I did see it in the trailer. Prepare to wait in agony for the last two movies because the ending of this one is gonna leave you dying to know whats gonna happen next. It might actually make you wanna pick up book 7 instead of waiting for the last 2 movies

THANKSGIVING THURSDAY THROWBACK: GOD MUST'VE SPENT (A LITTLE MORE TIME ON YOU)

Before I get to my thursday throwback first lemme say....

I was originally gonna post a Song for Mama by Boyz II Men because it was a family song and it came from the Soul Food soundtrack and everybody knows Soul Food is THE ULTIMATE Thanksgiving movie. BUT I kinda hated that song. The other two singles off the soul food soundtrack don't really fit the loving family vibe of thanks giving so I decided on another loving family song. This is Nsync's God Must've Spent. It was released back in 1999 and it's sweet loving family fun.

P.S. OMG Isn't it wierd looking back and seeing Justin with the blonde afro thingie? mr sexy back has come a long way since then huh?

WICKED COOL STYLE: T I

Now I usually don't pay attention to guy style. I find men's fashion boring simply because they don't have as much to work with has girls. We have all kinds of shirts pants dresses skirts hairstyles accessories and makeup combinations to try. Guys don't wear dresses, guys don't wear skirts, and guys don't wear make up (not counting drag queens and cross dressers of course) so they have a lot less variety. So it's huge to come across a guy that's so stylish that I think "omg I wanna dress my boyfriend just like him!". Who am I talking about. None other than T.I. He's stylish without being to outrageous (like Kanye West). Plus he's versatile he can look hood or he can look suave. Plus he also happens to be one of my many celeb crushes (yes I'd definitely hit that). Take a look.

REHAB

So RiRi has a new video and I thought it was strange because I been hearing this song on the radio since last year. I wasn't expecting her to make a video so long after. Well it's official good girl gone bad now has 7 singles. Most albums only make i to 4 if it's really good. It's a huge accomplishment. I think she could've did more with this particular video though. She doesn't look tortured enough. She had the chance to really get creative with this video but she didn't. She really should've put more effort into portraying a stormy relationship but instead it looks more like her and Justin Timberlake playing dress up. I'm kinda disappointed.

HEARTLESS

So Kanye has a new video. I find this strange because it feels like love lockdown just came out but whatevers. It's interesting. I can see where he drew inspiration from but we'll get to that in a minute. Watch the video first.

Heartless from kwest on Vimeo.

Now as soon as I saw this video and heard the subject matter of the song i instantly thought of Tupac. Still don't get the connection yet? Take a look at this video from way back in 1997.

Also did anybody catch the Andy Warhol reference? For anybody who doesn't know Andy Warhol is a famous artist that drew his inspiration from pop culture. Most known for his painting of Marylin Monroe...

... and Campbell's Tomato Soup

... and the soup makes an appearance in the Kanye Video around 1:41. Take a look again just in case you missed it. So lemme go on record and say I love the video because it gave me something to think about. Even though he's annoying as hell when he starts running his damn mouth I always love Kanye for giving me something to think about.

LATE AS HELL

I don't know why it slipped my mind to stop by jibjab.com this election year. They always have my favorite satirical music videos. Check out the video from 04.

Then there was the bush video they did in 05 when his approval rating started to drop.

I don't know how it slipped my mind to look for something on the 08 election but I found it. I know i'm late but whatever better late than never. It's still funny. Take a look.

THURSDAY THROWBACK: BLACK VELVETEEN

So this lovely song is off of Lenny Kravitz's 5th album 5. It was released back in 1998 but the video for this song was actually made in 1999 I believe. Why do I love it so much? Why did I choose to make it my very first thursday throwback? BECAUSE IT'S AN ODE TO THE CHOCOLATE STARFISH BABY!! Listen to me guys of all races out there. Lenny knows what he's talking about. The phrase is not only true for black men but black women as well. Once you go black.....well you know the rest. Here's the video.

FUNHOUSE

I only bought one pink album. It was her first album Can't Take Me Home. That was back in the days when they were trying to market her as an r&b singer. I didn't like it. I thought she was talented but I could tell it wasn't real. When artists don't feel their work it tends to come out corny. I never bought a pink album since. Even though she was doing the kind of music she wanted to do on her own terms I just didn't like the singles enough to care about the rest of the albums. I always had a tremendous amount of respect for her though. I loved her rebellious spirit and the fact that she was an individual. Anyone who knows me knows I'm a big advocate for individuality. So I decided to take a chance on Funhouse. I dig it. I don't really have an explanation as to why I dig it. I just do. I love the cover art too. My favorite song is the title track. I'm always partial to songs I can dance to.

ANIME & MANGA FOR FOODIES

First off for those who don't know the difference anime are the Japanese animated series' and manga are the Japanese graphic novels. This particular series comes in both forms. It's called Yakitate Japan. It was the first manga series I ever got into and I thought it was interesting because it was loosely based on fact. It's about a kid that wants to create bread that is uniquely Japanese called Ja-Pan (get it? pan as in bread?). Anyways what I mean by loosely based on fact is that they actually have cool facts about baking that most of us never knew. I'd definitley recomend it for all the foodies out there. The books look a little something like this.

And here's a clip of the anime series.
