RANDOM THOUGHTS ON GQ

So I'm sure a lot of you have heard about or seen the September 09 GQ cover featuring the man of the hour, Mr Michael Jackson. I'm also sure most of you have heard about the Jermaine Dupri twitter controversy pertaining to said GQ cover. Here's the story if you haven't read it.

Apparently JD is pissed at the headline of the supposed article, "When Michael was cool" and the headline "Before the Weirdness Claimed his legacy...". He claims those headlines where disrespectful back handed compliments and it's a bullshit tribute.

I do agree with JD. The entire article (not just the headlines) wasn't much of a tribute. If you want to honor the king respectfully it would be best to leave his weirdness out of it. But in defense of GQ, it wasn't like they were lying.

But disrespect aside this article (or it's pictures rather) did make me realize something. Michael was a pretty snazzy dresser back in the day. I know it sounds like I'm 1,000 years late. I know Michael's BEEN known for his iconic fashion. I'm well aware of the fedora, the glittery military jackets, the aviator shades and of course the single sequined glove. But I'm talking about Michael's fashion before all that.

Michael's been a damn good dresser since day one. Look at these fashionable pics from his teens and early 20s. (btw the mute button is on the top left hand corner. i couldn't really figure out how to take off that damned ashley tisdale song)

I'M KINDA DIGGIN THIS PIC

I just felt like sharing this picture. I think it's kinda cool. The one on the left is Grace Jones and was take in 1981. The one on the right is Amber Rose and was taken in 2009. I admire both of these ladies and their fearless approach to fashion. Very Cool pics.

RANDOM THOUGHTS ON BEING A LATE 80s BABY

I've been on a music downloading rampage lately. The last playlist I added to my ipod was an I love the 90s playlist.

It was only the second playlist of it's kind. The first was an I love the 70s playlist

This got me thinking. Why is it that I can make a 90s playlist from memory and a 70s playlist from memory but couldn't make an 80s playlist from memory. Afterall I am an 80s baby right?

To tell the truth if it didn't come from MJ in the 80s then chances are I didn't remember it. I don't even remember too much of Madonna's early stuff. Something seems to be wrong with this picture.

So I got to thinking until I reached an epiphany. First I thought well of course being born in the latter half of the 80's (December 86 to be specific) the 90's would be the only decade I remember fully (next year I'll be able to count the zeros, yes I said zeros that's what I like to call the early millennium years). So how is it could remember all these songs from a decade I wasn't even close to being born in?

Then I thought, "hmmm my mom was a teenager in her 70s, that was her hey day. Maybe she just blasted a lot of disco while I was in the womb". I certainly remember hearing a lot of 70s music around the house as a child (the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack in particular). But something told me that was part of the story but not the whole story.

The after that I thought well 70s was the decade of party tracks. It was the decade in which disco was born. It was the decade defined by constant clubbin. Of course being the dancer that I am I'd gravitate to that kind of music. This is also a huge factor but I still felt I hadn't hit the nail on the head yet.

I continued to ponder the matter as I listened to my ipod. I put it on shuffle and a few 90s songs came up in the mix. Then it hit me. I know all those 70s songs because they were all sampled in the 90s.

It's crazy just how many people in the 90s just stole the classic hits from the 70s. It's really a shame.

First I thought of the Jackson 5's ABC and Naughty By Natured turned it into something all perverted with OPP. Then I thought of Diana Ross' song Love Hangover and how that beat was stolen by Monica in The First Night. Then I thought of the Bee Gees Staying Alive and when Wyclef did a remake of it exactly 20 years later in 97 (I love Wycleff's remake though. he's totally forgiven for being a biter).

The list just goes on and on. I'm not even gonna get started on the hundreds of beats the inventor of the remix Mr Diddy (or whatever the hell his name is these days) stole in the 90s. It's was to the point where me and my sister would get shocked if we heard a Bad Boy song with an original beat.
You simply can't deny it. The 90s was a pretty uninventive decade when it came to music.

HOW COME MARIAH DOESN'T BUST OUT THE POWER BALLAD'S ANYMORE?

For some reason when I woke up this morning I felt like listening to some old school Mariah Carey. Just a few days ago I'd decided to add an old song of hers I used to love to ipod. It was called Music Box.

Listening to music box reminded me that Mariah actually used to have talent and that I actually liked her at one point. Before I knew it I was digging through my ancient cd collection looking for my Mariah Carey Greatest Hits album.

I poppin in the first disk and started playing Vision of Love, I Don't Wanna Cry and Anytime You Need a Friend. All I could think was geez she just doesn't bust those notes like she used to.

I know she just had a successful power ballad in 05 with We Belong Together. It was a cute song but honestly if you compare her vocals on that one to the old Mariah it doesn't even compare. It kinda pissed me off.

It's like God gave her this amazing talent and she's just sitting on it. She reminds me of the smart kid that dumbs themself down because they're trying to be cool. Now Mariah would much rather be cute and flaunt her "street cred" than show us that she has some bangin pipes.

Wow Mariah. I used to look up to you man. What happened?

OH HELL YEAH CHRIS!

Hey guess what kiddies! Chris Rock is coming out with a new documentary!
It's called good hair and it's about black women's struggle with hair. I think this shit was way overdue.
It's about damn time somebody shed light on our biggest struggle when it comes to beauty. Black women are so obsessed with having "good hair" that we could actually sit and have conversations with our girlfriends for hours about nothing but hair. I know this from experience.
I think this movie is going to be a great thing for us. So all my beautiful brown girls out there should grab their best gal pal and go see this movie as soon as it comes out. I know I will. Here's the trailer.
